Let AI handle the calendar. Let humans handle the patient.

90% of patients want a human on the phone. They’re only half right.

I’ve spent the last few weeks designing an AI front desk for a multi-location dental group. Every doctor I talk to asks the same thing first: “Won’t my patients hate talking to a robot?”

Wrong question.

A study this year tracked 4,280 calls across 26 dental clinics. 38% were never answered. New patients booked only 25% of the time.

Another analysis found 3 out of 4 missed calls come after hours: evenings, weekends, lunch break. So the patient who “wants a human” mostly isn’t getting one. They’re getting a ringtone. Then they call the next clinic.

But the other side is real too. Nearly 1 in 4 people who hit an AI on a health call gave up without getting help.

So patients don’t hate AI. They hate AI on the wrong call. That’s the whole game. Not AI vs human. Which call goes where.

5 calls AI should handle

  • After-hours booking. The 9 pm “any slot tomorrow?” call nobody’s there to pick up.
  • Reschedules and cancellations. Pure admin. Your front desk shouldn’t spend the morning on it.
  • Missed-call callbacks. Within minutes, not “first thing tomorrow.”
  • Reminders and confirmations. Most no-shows are a follow-up problem, not a patient problem.
  • The same 10 questions. Timings, location, parking, consultation fee, which insurance you take.

3 calls it never should

  • Anything that sounds like pain, bleeding, swelling or “is this urgent?” AI’s only job here is getting a human on the line, fast.
  • Reports and results. That’s a doctor’s voice. Every time.
  • The upset patient. A billing fight, a bad experience, someone in tears. A bot saying “I understand your frustration” is how you earn a 1-star review.

The rule I use

If the call is about time, AI takes it. If it’s about the body or emotions, a human does. And every AI line needs a one-step way to reach a real person. No exceptions.

If you run a clinic, you probably don’t need more people on the phones. You need the right calls reaching the people you already have.

Pull last month’s call log. Count how many came after 7 pm. That number is your answer.
